Thobani the man with his own mind
In 1997 when I was diagnosed HIV+ I was 26 years and my son was 1 year and 11 month. Many people in my community already knew that I will not make it just because the nurse who told me that I have got AIDS said to me you can go back to your bed and wait for your day to die. Now that I am still alive a lot of people always asking me what makes me strong and still kicking, my answer to them is that we are living in a real world where there is life there also challenges, but the only thing you have is to face your challenges. In 2001 when I decided to start taking ARV medication it was not easy facing stigma and discrimination in our communities, but because I had to choose between to go six fit underground or saving my life, I decided to take ARV medication for my whole life. Except that I am living positive life there are other challenges like any other people who are living normal life. For me what makes me a strong man is to have a very suppotive family, working with different people especialy my first time after my HIV status working for Treatment Action Compaign and also join the women who were doing body maps called Bambanani Womens Group. But now that I was involved with them we had to remove the word women and we are now called Bambanani Group. Another thing than I think it makes me strong is to come out with my status in public in 2001 when my picture was on the front page of the Mail Gardian newspaper, I was on TV programme called Beat It and adverts on Radio station and many local news papers. Working with women its not easy but for me, I have learned a lot, it was not the first time I have been a man in between women.
