Our visit to Handspring Puppets

Handspring Puppets

We were all absolutely charmed by Adrian Kohler of Handspring puppets yesterday as he toured us around his workshop/studio. I am sure most of you reading this blog will know of, or have seen "War Horse", Adrian and Basil Jones, Directors of Handspring Puppets were the creators of "War Horse". It was a remarkable experience to witness how all the horse puppets were made and created, and all of us were so inspired by the whole experience.

Thobani: I enjoyed watching how the puppets were created, since I was a child at the age of 13years I started to ride a donkey, and after that I asked my father to borrow me a horse so I could ride a horse, I enjoy riding a horse a lot. I have broken my arm from falling off a horse, but I still love horses and race on horses on the mountain. Seeing the horse puppets reminds me of the horse I ride when I am travelling around in the Eastern Cape visiting my relatives, I use a horse instead of a bus.

Nondumiso: I like the way the pieces were all put together to make an artwork, it reminded me of how we are building stories for our project in our studio, lots of pieces joining together to create our artworks. It was a very good experience, and I am looking forward to seeing the theatre show when it finally comes to Cape Town.

Thozama: I really liked how the legs were constructed to move, and the moving heads too it made me feel I could be part of the making of it.

Zodwa: I was so interested to see how real the eyes were, the horses looked alive as if they were watching us in the studio.

Noloyiso: I like everything in the puppet studio and also I read that they are a lot of things that a human being can do, and also I liked the respect of views of each other, if someone joins the studio the directors listen to their ideas and they become part of the whole process. Viva kuiondawo..
