Freedom to Create workshop.
As I mentioned in an earlier blog, on 15th Nov I was invited to lead a workshop for Freedom to Create with the Bambanani Group. It was a particularly hot day, with brilliant day light streaming into our studio, so possibly not the best day to decide to explore the dynamics of true expressionistic physical expression, but the Bambanani Group embraced the process with great energy and gusto.
We explored deep routed emotions that sit within our physical and emotional core and in particular the realities of coming to terms with and surviving the HIV/Aids virus. Opportunistic infection regularly attacks when the body has been weakened by the virus, and sometimes despite anti retroviral treatment the occurrence of these infections reawakens fear and trepidation within individuals when they strike, and so living with the virus continues to have long term psychological ramifications even with treatment support. This is perhaps why I can relate so closely with the subject even though I have a completely different medical history. I have regularly witnessed the weaknesses of my body including the side effects of taking medical treatments that, on the one hand enable and prolong survival, but that can also have extreme side effects. Perhaps this is exactly why the Bambinani and I understand how precious life is.
I have never seen my physical disabilities as a weakness but rather as strength, and like the Bambinani I am daily reminded that I am very much fighting to stay "alive". But this reality brings great richness to my experience and it is this experience that I draw upon when I am creating artwork. The recent deterioration of my eye sight and visual impairment has brought other obstacles, but I quickly discovered that creating artwork has little to do with your eyes, and it emerges instead from a deeper place within. This has brought psychological freedom and a greater energy to continue to explore and create.
My motivation for the Freedom to Create workshop with the Bambanani was to share my particular aesthetic, a creative landscape that is rich and that brings eternal possibilities.

The freedom to create or be creative can become an absolute necessity. In fact it can help you to survive physically, mentally and emotionally. I discovered that when I write poetry or perform my health improves, I can genuinly be myself feel free for a few moments. So freedom to create in my mind is vital to survive.
