Meeting my Sisi Nondumiso
It happened at Cape -Town Waterfront, with Table Mountain standing tall behind us. We both cried with joy, it was inevitable really..... 16 months before I had stood in front of Nondumiso's painting at the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology in Cambridge UK and I promised myself that one day I would find the lady who painted this picture, I sensed we both understood something deeply corporeal about being "alive". And so my journey began, a second hand catalogue was ordered from Australia, and when it arrived, I began to blind email all the names in the book, people generously responded and sent me in other directions until eventually, 2 months and hundreds of emails later I opened my computer to see a message:
"Hello I am Nondumiso Hlwele, and I believe you are looking for me"
And so I find myself standing at Cape Town Waterfront arms wrapped around Nondumiso, tears of emotion engulfing us and cheering LOCOG, The Arts Council and The British Council for making it all possible.
Setting the studio up tomorrow………it doesn’t get much better than this!
