My Story
My name is Bongiwe Mba, 36 years old, born in Guglethu.
In 2001 I was diagnosed with HIV. It is not easy coming out because of stigma and discrimination so at the time I disclose to my family, relatives and closest friends. 2002 I started ARVs weighing 46 kg with a low viral count after a few weeks of taking them. I saw a huge difference my weight picked up and viral load was undetectable and as years go by I decided to come out properly. In the same year I met with the Bambanani group while attending a support group at Nolungile M.S.F. We shared the same status, and our aim is to make the world know that HIV is there, and that it is not the death sentence.
We did our first body-map 2002 mid-year. We did another one June 2011 where we continue with our journey.
October 2011 met with this wonderful lady by the name Rachel, we are doing body-map but in a totally different way, our works looks very different, she is teaching us painting, how to express our feelings through painting and to show the world that we are not victims, people must not see us as victims, but see us as people who are strong, determined, ambitious, have dreams and hopes, lastly people who are survivors.
My Hopes for the Future
- I wish to see everyone gets equal freedom. To see S.A. as a better place to live, where you walk any time of the day, you are not afraid any more, not discriminated, and where there are equal job opportunities for everyone.
- To see my brother graduate and become a better person.
- Lifetime trip - overseas, whether on a boat or flight.
- To see everyone come out of the closet and not be ashamed of their status and accept themselves for who they are.

Dear Bongiwe, Your blog post is very moving but also inspiring. And yes my friend Rachel is a wonderful person and teacher. She can motivate you do things, you never knew you were capable of.
