Cape - Town Residency Celebration at Sobeit Studios
On Saturday the 12th November we welcomed all of our friends and supportors to Sobeit Studios to celebrate the end of our Cape Town collaborative Residency. It was a joyous day watching all of my Bambanani friends dance with delight as they showed and talked about their artworks to their family, friends and guests, Jean September, Deputy Director of British Council SA, (British Council are one of our major funders for the commission) attended with Thabisa Ndlazi (also British Council) who has been instrumental in helping us with all the logistic of the Cape Town Residency, and Tina Smith, Curator of District Six Museum, Kate Timperly and The Freedom to Create Team, Bishop and Mrs Winston and many many more.
It was fantastic to see so many tiny young people enjoying the artwork and the celebration too!
The celebration event was an opportunity for each one of the Bambanani Group to speak in public about their life experiences, the Residency and the artworks that they have created for this commission. I know their stories moved and inspired everyone who was there, and we are now very much looking forward to sharing all of the work with you at exhibitions in Cambridge, Liverpool and London in 2012.
The residency represents the first stage of the commission, and on my return to London I will be creating a body of visual artworks that integrate the Bambanani's stories into the narrative, I will be also be working along side Deborah May as she edits the film shot by Cliff Bestall in Cape Town, and I will continue to develop the performance with choreographer Athina Valha. So there is still lots to do, but what an amazing start...........
I will be eternally grateful to Thobani, Nondumiso, Bongiwe, Noloyiso, Thozama and Zodwa for being wonderful artistic collaborators, we are life long friends, and I am now a Bambanani Group member too.
