Muizenberg
Sobeit Studio is located in Muizenberg. During 1880 to 1930 this coastal town evolved from what was nothing more than a motley settlement of shacks and farmhouses into the premier holiday resort in SA – known as “the Brighton of South Africa”. So entering the deco warehouse yesterday we find our studio engulfed and framed by an Ed and Nancy Keinholtz style installation of props and objects that Bartel (who runs the studios) has collected from around the globe. For all of you who are familiar with my past artwork, you will appreciate it was like entering an Aladdin’s cave for me, where visual stimulation loaded with emotional contexts caught my every glance. And so……..my psychogeographic artistic journey begins, unfolding in front of my eyes trapped within the geometric lines of this classic architectural edifice, and within my new found paradise that is to be our home for the next 6 weeks. The charcoal and paint brushes are ready and the canvas and velvet will be nailed up tomorrow. The creative moment has finally arrived…………..
